Bachelor of Architecture, University of Cincinnati 1960. Bill (Willie) Nilsen was a co founder of the Bitterroot Design Group and was, and continues to be its guiding inspiration.
Nilsen moved to San Francisco upon completion of his education, and began a long association with Architects Charles and Ray Eames. He also worked for some of the top offices in the Bay Area including Wurster Bernardi Emmons, Skidmore Owings Merrill (Bank of America World Headquarters), and John Bolles.
He eventually started his own practice, Low Real Nilsen, specializing in major department store retail merchandising. All the while, Nilsen was designing and building homes, and painting the landscape of San Francisco and Marin County, where he lived for more than 40 years.
After retiring, Nilsen continued to design residential projects and pursue his love for painting. Nilsen first traveled to Big Sky in 2000 and immediately began designing homes for BDG’s earliest clients. Some of his work is still under construction or yet to be built. His unique talent, presence, sense of humor, and leadership, continue to remind us of our commitment to outstanding design.
